For people who would otherwise need to buy something like a Cintiq to work in specific desktop apps, Astropad is worth the money. So why do I still use Astropad? The truth is that for professionals, there are still a lot of things that you can do in Photoshop that you can't do in Procreate (for example, in Procreate you can't resize an image once you've created it). It's way more expensive and way less portable. So while for Procreate all you need is your iPad, the Pencil and the App, with Astropad you need the iPad, the Pencil, the subscription to Astropad, a reasonably fast Mac, and an Adobe subscription (or whatever other software you use). Astropad is strictly a utility for mirroring your computer screen onto your iPad and letting you use the apple pencil to draw on your computer. You're not actually drawing in Astropad itself, you're plugging your iPad into your computer and using Astropad so you can draw in Photoshop or another program.
Astropad studio app pro#
The Astropad Studio app runs on the iPad Pro and communicates with a sister application on the Mac. The company also sells Astropad Standard, which works with non-Pro iPad models and costs 29.99 as a one-time purchase. Astropad (and now Astropad Studio) are built for people who want to work in desktop apps like Photoshop, but still take advantage of the Apple Pencil and the nice screen on the iPad Pro. Astropad Studio does the same on the iPad Pro you already own, wired or wirelessly. You can work from start to finish all within the app, wherever you are (here are a few pieces I've drawn in Procreate). It is a free download, but using it beyond the 7-day free trial requires a subscription: 7.99 monthly or 64. Your Apple ID (App Store/iTunes account) is only used for subscription payment. Astropad Studio follows a different business model than the original Astropad app, now dubbed Astropad Standard.
